Earning the Right to Hold Hands

Earning the Right to Hold Hands

We were in Zambia, eating pizza as word kept coming in about how the Corona Virus was affecting everything around us.  I was helping Jean restructure our plans for teaching, and he was sharing new pieces of his story with me about his time in Zambia when he nudged me to look at Jessica and Eliza.  In the middle of an outdoor restaurant, there they sat, holding hands, tears flowing, life altering conversations happening. The world was falling apart, but they had the insight to see the more important thing for them in that moment.     I know Jess. ...

When Campaigners Flew South, Two Worlds Collided

When Campaigners Flew South, Two Worlds Collided

Recently what felt like the entire political weight of the country descended on Georgia. It was the subject of complaints, jokes, bonfires—and one beautiful unseen good.   I had a lunch conversation last week that left me hopeful and inspired. I’ve talked a lot about my friend Raven and the impact she has had on my life. That day was totally different and also completely the same. She consistently inspires me.   We were talking about the state of the union when she casually shared about a paint class she recently taught. Raven is a talented artist with a compassionate...

Hindsight is 2020

Hindsight is 2020

I’m up early, starting 2021 with Jesus. The whole “hindsight is 2020” has been rolling around in my mind a lot the past few days. Each January, I make time to reflect back on my year: celebrate the good and hopefully learn from the challenges. Sitting on my back porch, the rain is coming down. I set my mind to think of it as cleansing instead of gloomy. I look around the yard, breathing in nature. This particular tree has caught my attention for several days because it is still pretty when everything else has gone dormant. Slowly, I saw...

Does Your Path Feel Janky?

“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”  Proverbs 3:6   In what ways do I not acknowledge You?  How has that made my path janky?   I am relearning from an old journaling devotional this morning. I had written this question with this scripture. I love a good question.   I have spent time wandering in the wilderness. Aimlessly searching for dreams, promises, happiness. The Israelites didn’t wander around in a massive wilderness.  It was pretty small actually. But their lack of repentance and obedience caused their path to be busy work.   In...

How I Almost Screwed Up My Prayers for Our Nation

I was awake in the middle of the night, thinking about our nation.  I immediately started praying through my deep fears and concerns for our country--then stopped myself. I know better. 'My father, who art in Heaven,Hallowed be your name'. Lately, I have wonder why so many believers are convinced that God is about to move in a certain direction? Yet they are deeply praying and believing in completely different—opposite things. How is that possible?  I think the Lord revealed something critical to me during my time sitting still with that question on my prayer journey last night. I think...
